School Programs

For the classroom (both public schools and homeschools), I offer a very fun and informative program with content that is based on the age group. For Minnesota schools, your classroom program will touch on most (if not all) of the Life Science benchmarks for your grade as described in the Minnesota Academic Standards in Science, shown at the bottom of this page. For Wisconsin, my programs touch on Wisconsin's Model Academic Standards for Science, Standard F- Life and Environmental Science, appropriate to each grade.

My programs typically run about 45 minutes plus an additional 20-30 minutes afterwards for more snake interaction opportunities, but may vary slightly depending on group size. For larger audiences, I like to walk around more with each snake so that everyone has an opportunity to see them up close. Because of this, programs may take a little longer with large groups.

What do I cover in my programs?

From tongue flicking and shedding skin to reptiles you can find in your own backyard, I cover many topics in my programs using an assortment of props and live animals! For kindergaten classes I focus mostly on colors, feels, and how snakes are different than people. For older kids I focus on the food chain, characteristic traits, ecological benefits of snakes and reptiles. For all ages I talk about what makes an animal a reptile, what makes snakes so unique, native snakes to the area, and more! Most of my reptiles and amphibians are native species, making them great examples of what you might find in your own backyard. Watch as your students transform into hognose snakes displaying their impressive defense mechanism: rolling onto their back to play dead! My programs can also be tweaked to cover a specific class lesson or theme if requested!

Finally, one of the most exciting parts of these programs is when kids actually get to watch a snake eat a [frozen/thawed] mouse firsthand! This is a great way to demonstrate the food chain in action!

$140 per program (45-minute presentation followed by 20-30 minutes of "Reptile Handling Time"), plus a small mileage fee depending on where you are located. Any additional programs scheduled for the same day are just $100 each! Fees are negotiable depending on desired program length, audience size, etc. Please contact me for details. I accept cash, checks, and all major credit cards.

I also offer great add-ons that go well with any program!

Add-on #1: A framed snakeskin craft! One audience member (the birthday girl/boy, teacher, scout leader, or whoever you choose) gets to keep a real snakeskin arranged in a frame that everyone can sign for just $20! An example is to the right.

Add-on #2: Real snakeskin shed necklaces! Pick your background color, pendant style (silver or bronze), and chain style (adjustable brown cord or ball-link chain) and I will custom make your very own snakeskin necklace for only $10. An example is to the left. Only snakeskin sheds are used to make these; no animals were harmed in the process.
